Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW)
Background
GBG Group Australia was engaged to undertake a seismic geophysical investigation as part of a feasibility-stage study for a proposed mining development. The project aimed to provide preliminary geotechnical information to support early design and planning decisions.
The investigation was conducted in a remote region of Northern Western Australia, where access constraints, limited infrastructure, and challenging environmental conditions required careful logistical planning. Field operations were carried out alongside active drilling programs, requiring close coordination to ensure safe and efficient data acquisition.
Objective
To provide preliminary geotechnical information, including shear wave velocity profiles, subsurface layering, and soil stiffness characteristics, to support early-stage design and inform subsequent investigation phases.
Methods
The investigation utilised Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) to characterise subsurface stiffness and develop shear wave velocity profiles across the site.
To accommodate varying terrain and access constraints, multiple seismic sources were employed. A Propelled Energy Generator (PEG-40) was used as the primary source in accessible areas, while a 12 kg sledgehammer was utilised in locations where equipment access was restricted.
Outcome
The investigation provided a strong preliminary dataset describing subsurface conditions across the site, including shear wave velocity profiles, layering, and indicative depth to bedrock.
These results support early-stage geotechnical interpretation and provide a basis for refining design parameters and planning subsequent investigation phases.
Despite challenging conditions including high temperatures, humidity, remote access, and limited communications, the survey was completed safely and efficiently. The project demonstrates GBG’s ability to deliver high-quality geophysical data in complex and demanding environments, supporting informed decision-making for mining development.
